As an adult, I’ve dependably received press releases about these bands every couple of years and am reminded that these bands still release music, still tour, and - lo and behold - still chart. And if I had to spend more time thinking about Three Days Grace, I’d remember how they were one of a cluster of post-grunge and nu-metal-adjacent acts that sprang out of the early aughts, on par with Hoobastank, Sevendust, Chevelle, and Seether. When I think of Three Days Grace, which to be honest I haven’t since about the year 2003, I think of that Top 40 anger-banger “I Hate Everything About You,” which enjoyed a real hot streak at the time it’s the band’s longest running song on the Modern Rock chart at 45 weeks. The competition is amplified, too, by the fact that both bands are releasing new albums this spring, with Three Days Grace dropping Explosions in May and Shinedown releasing Planet Zero in April. It’s the band’s 16th chart-topper and its first since 2019 (“Right Left Wrong”). This week Three Days Grace have a song called “So Called Life” (which should read “So-Called Life” - ugh, my chronic urge to copy-edit song titles) at #1. There, hard-rock lifers Three Days Grace are up against genre rivals/contemporaries Shinedown for the most number ones in the 40-year history of the chart. Time is frozen, like an everlasting gobstopper or one of those perfectly preserved midcentury interiors you see on TikTok. But if you tab over to Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, a funny thing happens. The clock ticks, the earth travels around the sun, we age and celebrate birthdays/anniversaries, and time marches on.

Next up, Shinedown will kick off The Revolution’s Live Tour beginning April 1 with special guests The Pretty Reckless and DIAMANTE, propelled by the undeniable power of front man Brent Smith’s voice and their biggest stage production yet. After headlining Welcome to Rockville on May 21, the band heads to the UK/Europe for festival appearances at Rock im Park and Rock am Ring in Germany, Download Festival in the UK, and HellFest in France along with select shows with Iron Maiden and then continues on for headlining dates in Canada with support from Pop Evil and Ayron Jones. The album – a high-concept, ultra-vivid, viscerally charged saga – was produced by Shinedown’s Eric Bass (who also produced the band’s 2018 acclaimed album ‘ ATTENTION ATTENTION’ ) and recorded at Bass’ newly built Big Animal Studio in South Carolina. Part social commentary and part in-depth exploration of the human psyche, there is also hope, triumph, and reminders that we all need one another. After all, it is the band’s impassioned striving for unity that has long been at the heart of their creative output. The video brings to life a glimpse of a dystopian future that warns of the dangerous dehumanizing consequences of cancel culture run rampant and rings the alarm with a cautionary warning that if we shut each other down, we risk losing empathy, respect for one another, and our ability to communicate and unify in a way that leads to actual progress and understanding. The video is complete with an insidious and unsettling character named Cyren from the album’s interludes who we hear at the end of the music video. “Planet Zero” is an introduction to the album’s incisive look at some of society’s most critical issues, including the increasingly toxic division among those of differing ideologies, the need for honesty in our public discourse, and the corrosive effects of social media and cancel culture on mental health and humanity. The band recently released the music video for “Planet Zero”, directed by Charles De Meyer. Says front man Brent Smith, “ALL HAIL… POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!! We are beyond grateful to everyone at Rock Radio for all of their incredible support, and thank you to all of Shinedown nation, for making Planet Zero #1. “Planet Zero” is the band’s sixth consecutive #1. Last year Billboard named Shinedown #1 on their Greatest Of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists Chart. The explosive and thought-provoking single is also Shinedown’s 17 th #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs Chart, breaking a new record (which they also previously held) for the most #1’s in the 40-year history of the chart and tying Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for the second most Top 10s on the chart, behind only Foo Fighters. Multi-platinum band Shinedown have notched their 18 th #1 at Active Rock Radio this week with their lead single and title track “Planet Zero” from their forthcoming album outĪpril 22 on Atlantic Records.
